Marisa Peer, a renowned therapist and the creator of Rapid Transformational Therapy has captivated audiences worldwide with her insights into the human mind. Her book, The Rules of the Mind, distils decades of experience into practical principles that empower individuals to harness the subconscious mind for personal growth, success, and happiness.
Here is a summary of some of the Rules of the Mind to empower to have a deeper uunderstanding of how you mind works and how to begin transforming your limiting self-beliefs and thoughts so you can take control of your life and make sustainable and positive changes.
The Mind responds to words & pictures
Your mind responds to the thoughts you think and words that you say to yourself, and this becomes a blueprint for your life. You mind can’t distinguish between what is real or not and will do what you tell it to do. The Mind can’t hold conflicting thoughts and beliefs.
If you constantly say negative and self-critical things to yourself then you will get negative results. If you tell yourself, "I can't do this or I always make mistakes", your mind will accept that as truth and act accordingly. The opposite is also true, envisioning success and affirming positive outcomes, like “I am learning, I can do this” sends a clear message to the subconscious mind that primes it for achievement. Visualisation and verbal affirmations are powerful tools for reprogramming the mind and enhancing your self-talk. Use positive and uplifting words and language.
Practice saying affirmations in the present tense. Your mindset is absolute key; success is 80% your mindset and 20% action towards your goals. It is important to pair these affirmations with actions steps that are in alignment with your specific goals.
The Mind loves familiarity
We are creatures of habit; the human mind gravitates toward what it knows. This explains why habits, even detrimental ones are so hard to break. Change is resisted because it is unfamiliar, and your brain wants to protect you from anything that is not familiar whether it is good or bad. Peer explains that a sense of familiarity often overrides logic, leading people to repeat behaviours that do not serve them. To counteract this, you must create a new sense of familiarity with positive habits and thoughts. Change may feel uncomfortable at first, but repeating constructive actions and ideas trains the mind to adopt them as the new normal.
Make the unfamiliar familiar and be consistent in practicing new habits. It takes up to 28 days to break a habit.
Ask yourself, what’s one negative habit you would like to break and how would you go about doing this? What specific action steps would you take?
What You Focus on Expands
The mind amplifies whatever you concentrate on, whether good or bad. Peer emphasises that negative thoughts can create a downward spiral, while focusing on uplifting ideas can lead to exponential growth and positivity. This principle is closely tied to the law of attraction, where energy and attention dictate the outcomes in one's life. Keeping your focus on success, joy and gratitude can transform your perspective and generate a ripple effect of positive experiences.
Write down 10 things you are grateful for your life. Do this everyday for 10 days and see how this shifts your mindset and energy.
Focus on your goals and what you what to attract more of in your life? Write some statements down as if you have already achieved these goals. For example, I am so happ and grateful now that I have…………
The Mind Always Works to Move You Towards Pleasure and Away from Pain
The mind is wired to seek pleasure and avoid pain, but this can sometimes lead to sabotage when immediate gratification conflicts with long-term goals. Peer highlights the importance of redefining pleasure to align with your aspirations. For instance, rather than finding comfort in unhealthy habits, you can train the mind to associate pleasure with progress, wellness, and self-growth. This reconditioning allows you to overcome procrastination and adopt behaviours that benefit your future.
Creating new habits take at least 28 days to rewire the neural pathways in your brain. For example, if you want to give up smoking or drinking, you first need to understand what’s going on in your subconscious mind? You feel stressed because of work related or relationship stress. Catch your self-sabotaging behaviour my understanding the triggers and then aim to create more healthy habits for dealing with that stress.
Reframe your goals to create a more resilient mindset and transform the challenges in your life. For example, instead of saying “I hate my long commute to work every day”, flip it this thought to “I love having time to read my favourite book”
You might not always be able to change a specific situation, but you can change how you think about it and perceive it, and this is so empowering.
The Mind Believes What You Tell It
Perhaps the most empowering rule of all is that the mind accepts everything you communicate to it as fact, especially with repetition. Peer advocates for deliberate and consistent positive affirmations to overwrite negative self-perceptions. Statements like "I am confident," "I am enough," and "I achieve success effortlessly" act as seeds planted in the subconscious, eventually bearing fruit in the form of transformed beliefs and actions. Being mindful of your internal dialogue is crucial to shaping your external reality.
The Rules of the Mind serves as a powerful reminder of the limitless potential within human thought. By understanding and applying the principles Peer outlines, you can transcend barriers and achieve extraordinary outcomes. These rules help unlock the mind's ability to shape reality, demonstrating that what we think, believe, and visualize can indeed become our truth.
Marisa Peer’s insights resonate universally, encouraging readers to take charge of their mental programming and create a life of fulfilment and joy. Whether you are seeking confidence, success, or inner peace, the rules of the mind offer a roadmap to profound personal transformation.
