Steps to overcoming obstacles in life and transforming your fear into fuel for success

Where does fear begin?

We are born fearless. We are born free. So how do we become fearful?

Like all emotions, fear starts in the brain. We learn how to be fearful from our experiences in life, usually formed in childhood. Each person will experience life differently, as outlined in her book, Make Fear your Friend, “if we don’t have pillars of security such as acceptance, understanding, love and freedom, fear steps in to fill the gap and will take over”. According to Marisa Peer who created Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT), our core beliefs are formed in childhood and these beliefs shape our thoughts, behaviours and actions for the rest of our lives. Our minds job is to keep us safe and to take us away from anything that we fear, but this can keep us stuck in an unhealthy state of mind and prevents us from doing all the things we really want to in life.

Some common fears include but not limited to the following.

·       Fear of failure

·       Fear of being judged

·       Fear of being unloved

·       Fear of rejection

·       Fear of loneliness

Most of us spend a large amount of time feeling afraid, even if we do not realise it or won’t admit it. Our minds job is to keep us safe and to take us away from fear. Fear gains strength through our anxiety which will manifest into physical systems in our body.

Having a conversation with your fears

Ask yourself what am I afraid of? Shining the light on our fears and being brave enough to have a conversation with your fears is a powerful act. When we acknowledge our fears and give them a voice, we realise that they are screaming out to be heard because they have an important message to tell us.

Ask yourself these questions, reflect and write down your responses. What are your fears trying to tell you? Then flip the negative thought, words and language into a more positive statement. The only thing we can control over in this world is how we choose to think, act and respond to the things that happen, not to us but for us?

What am I worried about most?

Am I attaching my own self-worth to the success of this dream?

What will happen if I fail?

Am I afraid of disappointing myself or others?
